The Italian words in these are from Antonio Gramsci's letters from prison, Leone Ginzburg's last letter from prison, and Natalia Ginzburg's writings about life under fascism, including her poem MEMORIA about the loss of her husband Leone, murdered by the Nazis in Rome in 1944.

Writing from prison, Gramsci tells his wife Julia that he always remembers how, after they first met, he stood watching her walk away in to the distance, with her violin in one hand and her travel bag in the other

From prison Gramsci wrote to his wife Julia, far away in Moscow, telling her not worry about him. He compared himself to the Arctic explorer Nansen, who let his ship become imprisoned by the ice hoping it would deliver him, years later, to the Pole.
